Quality Street

November 2, 2011

Katharine Hepburn is my favorite actress & I have been on a mission, over the years, to see all her flims. I have seen most of them. I just finished “Quality Street”. This is Katharine’s 12th film and was released in 1937.
This film is based off of a play written in the early 1900’s and takes place in England. It is the story of a lady, Phoebe (Hepburn), who is in love with Dr. Gray. Dr. Gray comes calling on Phoebe one day and her sister and her believe he is about to propose. He really comes to tell her he is heading off to war. He discoverers, after returning 10 years later, that his faithful Phoebe is worn and unattractive. So Phoebe transforms herself and pretends to be a younger niece to win back his affection. Phoebe, with the help of her sister, trick the whole town with this hilarious game. In the end Dr. Gray realizes it is truly Phoebe he loves not her niece.
This film didn’t do well at the box office and is a bit hard to follow at the beginning. It is set in England and is based off a play written in the early 1900’s. If you watch it, give it time. It picks up and becomes a great little film. It if full of humor and fun and I would recommend it to all.
Most of Katharine Hepburn’s early films were not released on DVD and VHS copies can be hard to find but thanks to Warner Brother’s Archive Collection these films and many others have been made avalible. Go to www.warnerarchive.com for a complete list of films now available.
